MEDIATION IN PRACTICE

Course Description:

Mediation in Practice © is a course designed to limit conflicts by evolving new guidelines of communication suited to each individual and each organization's needs. It helps facilitate the flow of information and resolves differences compassionately. This course is based on identifying universally shared standards and needs. MIP© can be applied in educational institutions, business and industry sectors, and social service agencies. This course helps individuals to select language that does not engender hostilities thereby relaxing and mediating emotionally charged situations at a personal and professional level.

MIP © encourages people to use language that increases goodwill. It teaches people how to avoid language that creates resentment or lowers self-esteem. It also emphasizes personal responsibility for our choices of emotions. MIP © can be used effectively even without the other person's or group's knowledge of the process. This program helps participants create solutions based on safety, respect, and consensus.

MIP © also borrows concepts from Non-Violent Communication (NVC) pioneered by Marshall Rosenberg. Participants introduced to jackal and giraffe languages by way of puppets are effectively made aware of the violence that lurks in our every day language and its devastating impact on civil society. NVC has been used successfully in mediating disputes between Arab-Israeli citizens, between warring factions in African states and the Balkans, and between bitter enemies caught in a spiral of violence.

Objectives of Mediation in Practice are to:

1. honor and respect others while we meet our needs.
2. remedy the effects of painful or unsuccessful communication
3. learn to adopt methods which lead to successful conflict resolution
4. bridge cultural differences in organizations
5. avoid 'storming' during team building and use techniques to handle conflicts.
6. develop a lifetime commitment to collectively overcoming difficult situations.
7. make objective evaluations and observations.
8. use tools to nurture long-term harmonious relationships for Team Building
9. resolve feelings of anger, guilt, shame, fear and frustration.
10. redirect anger towards coalition building, cooperative outcomes.
